Chris Downing is Georgia Tech’s new economic development boss.
Downing was named vice president of Georgia Tech's Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2), which bills itself as the nation’s largest university-based program of business and industry assistance, technology commercialization, and economic development.
Downing takes over from Stephen Fleming, who left that job last year.
As chief of EI2, Downing will run the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC). In recent years, the technology business incubator has cycled through multiple leaders and undergone several pivots as it tries to find its place among a wave of new technology incubators and startups hubs.
Downing takes over in the midst of expansion by Georgia Tech. He will be involved in major real estate developments, including the expansion of the university in Cobb County and the creation of a biotech corridor on Atlanta's Westside.
