The Georgia Bio Emerging Leaders Network and the Atlanta BEST Program have organized a series of networking and panel events focused on raising awareness of career paths that exist in life sciences for individuals with advanced degrees.

This program will bring together experts across a wide range of disciplines and functional areas within the life science industry. Panelists will detail their roles and provide a rich context for the audience to gain a clear understanding of the skills, aptitudes, competencies, and personalities that thrive in their particular functions. In addition, the event will provide an overview of the career paths, educational background, and lessons learned by the panelists.  Attendance for this program is open to current graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and others interested in careers in the life sciences industry.

Life Science industry careers can span a variety of backgrounds including traditional roles in sciences, regulatory affairs, and business development, to more varied roles in the legal field, marketing, economic development, and policy/government affairs. This event will provide an overview of career paths in Economic Development & Government Affairs as it relates to the life sciences.

The role of a person working in economic development is to retain, recruit and expand companies in a certain municipality (county, city, state). A job working for a Chamber of Commerce, for example,  focuses on improving a local business community. Oftentimes, these roles can be broken down by industry. With a background in Life Sciences, an employee in economic development already has the understanding of what it may take to run a successful medical device or pharma company, or perhaps a CRO facility. The role of a person working in government affairs for a life sciences company is to lead efforts advocating for issues important to their company with members of Congress and their staff. Persons in these roles may have studied public policy and/or a science related field.
