Event Description:
Genetics has become the most important discipline in the field of medicine. With the dawn of personalized medicine the use of our genome, and the variation therein, will one day allow doctors to prescribe specific treatments aimed at our individual genetic makeup. By understanding the interplay between genes and the environment scientists are working out the causes of disease.

At this workshop you will learn how to extract DNA from organism genomes (plant and animal), the use of restriction enzymes to get the piece of DNA you want and how to prepare/ run gel electrophoresis to separate the DNA based on size. Photo documentation of the gel will be performed to visualize the difference between digested and undigested DNA. Some advanced topics will also be discussed, including recombinant DNA and PCR.

Skills developed: safety protocols, basic pipetting, understanding dilution and weighing, the steps involved in preparing the gel, and precautions that need to be taken to ensure proper results.

Space is limited to 15 teachers.
